Allergies

Ilse Aigner

"Good consumer information is important when shopping, particularly for allergy sufferers."(Federal Minister Ilse Aigner)

Allergies are becoming increasingly wide-spread in Germany. More than 30 percent of the population now suffer from an allergy or an intolerance. And this figure is rising. There is a wide range of allergenic substances. Allergies almost always cause a huge deterioration in the quality of life and health of those affected and their families. The BMELV’s Action Plan against Allergies provides information for sufferers and all those who want to find out more via the allergy portal www.aktionsplan-allergien.de; the plan also raises awareness among the business community, from manufacturers to the restaurant and catering sector, about the needs of allergy sufferers.

Consumer protection is also enhanced by compulsory labelling of the 14 main allergenic substances on packaged foods. The BMELV is attempting to establish an alliance among those involved in order to have voluntary measures taken for unpackaged food as well ("loose goods", e.g. pastries, meat and sausage products).

Allergies are now reaching epidemic proportions. In many areas they are no longer merely a task for the health sector, but also constitute an issue that relates to consumer protection in the broader sense.
