Rural areas are more than a mere romantic idyll. There are strong economic regions as well as areas struggling with a high unemployment rate, a rural exodus and aging. These regions must be rendered fit for the future. To this end, the BMELV elaborates concrete proposals in an inter-ministerial working group with members from various federal ministries.

The BMELV sees itself as the champion of rural areas, with nationwide broadband supply, an efficient social infrastructure with kindergartens, schools and doctors' surgeries, new earning opportunities, targeted promotion and reliable social security but also conservation of the cultivated landscape - the foundation for tourism and leisure activities. The goal of these BMELV measures is the sustainable development of rural areas offering a high quality of life, jobs and a healthy environment.
