Sustainability - Core focus of German-Malaysian cooperation

"Agriculture and forestry in Germany and Malaysia make an important contribution to both food security and climate protection by aligning production more closely to the principles of sustainability", said Dr. Gerd Müller, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, in his talks today with Mr. Bernhard Dompok, Malaysian Minister for Plantation Industries.

Malaysia has made good progress in the sustainable production of palm oil and wood. State Secretary Müller was able to see that for himself during his visit to Malaysia in July 2009. The recognition of the Malaysian sustainability criteria in May 2009 marked a major step forward for the protection and sustainable use of tropical forests in the wood-based industries.

In addition, Malaysian businesses have been included in a pilot project funded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture that is designed to test a certification scheme for the use of palm oil for energy production. State Secretary Müller acknowledged this development and made it clear that the new Federal Government intends to pursue the sustainability approach not only in bioenergy production, but also in the production of food and feed in the future. "We therefore want to continue our successful cooperation with Malaysia in these new directions as well", said Gerd Müller.

Minister Dompok, who is accompanied by a large Malaysian delegation, is currently visiting several European countries, including Germany, in order to provide information on the progress made in the Malaysian palm and wood-based industries and to coordinate the further cooperation steps.
