Aigner: Boosting consumers’ ability to make well-informed decisions and opt for products from sustainable fisheries
"Consumers need information in order to be able to make well-informed decisions on what to buy. We provide this information so that our support for sustainable fisheries begins right at the counters", said Ilse Aigner, Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection in Cologne today.
At Anuga, the Minister joined representatives from the Johann Heinricht von Thünen Institute, the Federal Association of the German Food Trade (Bundesverband des Deutschen Lebensmittelhandels) and the Federal Product Board for Fisheries (Bundesmarktverband der Fischwirtschaft) to present an interactive system of consumer information.
"Our aim is to consistently implement our concept for ensuring sustainable fisheries 'from the water to the plate'. We therefore have to get consumers on board as well. They are able to make an important contribution towards supporting sustainably-managed fish stocks through their purchasing decisions. This is the point at which our consumer information system comes into play", said Minister Aigner. The new information system provides consumers with appropriate and understandable guidance so they can take sustainability criteria into account when deciding what fish to buy.
The necessary information on the respective fish species, fish stocks and fisheries can now be found on the internet at www.fischinfo.de and www.portal-fischerei.de.
This database is to be continuously developed in the next three years with the aim being to have a total of about 200 data sheets, containing scientifically sound information on all the important fish species that are caught for consumption.
