Lindemann: Success of reform key to future role of the FAO

"The success of FAO reform is key to the FAO's role in the new Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security", said Gert Lindemann, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, on the occasion of the 36th FAO Conference in Rome.

At the World Food Summit held in Rome from 16 to 18 November 2009, the participating states reaffirmed their will to establish a Global Partnership for Agriculture and Food Security that is designed to create a new structure for international cooperation in world food affairs.

"The FAO bears a particular responsibility in this global food security structure. But the FAO reform process must continue so that the FAO can perform its tasks effectively", said Lindemann.

"Now that the World Food Summit is over it is a matter of breathing life into this Global Partnership and developing a competence network", said the State Secretary. "To this end it is essential for the international organisations to work well and intensively together as partners."

As the general assembly of the 191 Member States, the FAO Conference is the supreme governing body of the FAO. It meets every two years and decides on the budget and guidelines of FAO policy.
