"Research and innovation in the agri-food sector make an important contribution to solving our future problems."(Federal Minister Ilse Aigner)

BMELV research is closely linked to the future-centric topics climate protection, renewable resources and feeding the global population. One of the main goals is to protect the natural environment through sustainable agricultural production. At the same time, perspectives are to be created for rural areas. Last but not least food safety and a healthy diet are other important research topics.

Around 400 million Euro are made available every year in order to achieve progress in BMELV research on these topics. Research needs for the next few years are specified in the BMELV Research Plan.

The departmental research units are the main source of scientific findings for the preparation of the political decisions of the BMELV. Furthermore, the BMELV promotes research projects from the Innovation Programme and in the areas of Renewable Resources and Organic Farming.
